Restaurants: Toby’s Tavern

Tobys Tavern

Toby’s Tavern is located in the scenic town of Coupeville on Whidbey Island, Washington. The building sits along the tranquil shores of Penn Cove, renowned for its bountiful crop of mussels, Sailboats, and Orca Whales. Originally constructed around 1890 as a mercantile, this historic structure has seen the rise and fall of many businesses. After the era of prohibition, it transformed into a beer parlor and has since operated as a tavern/restaurant since the early 1960s.

The back bar, a true relic, embarked on a journey around Cape Horn and found its home in the officers’ club at Fort Warden around 1900. It then made its way to Fort Casey before finally settling at the Central Hotel in Coupeville. When an unfortunate fire struck the hotel, the beloved back bar was rescued and found its permanent residence at Toby’s.

Toby’s Tavern is filled with memorabilia from the Pacific Northwest. One particular item of interest is the old five-man racing shell that hangs from the ceiling. This racing shell, originally built by George Pocock for the University of Washington in the early 1950s, has competed across the globe.

However, the cozy small-town atmosphere surrounding this historic pub is even more significant. For generations, Toby’s has been the beloved gathering place for the community of Central Whidbey, radiating good cheer and camaraderie. The talented kitchen staff at Toby’s prides themselves in preparing delectable meals, highlighting local specialties such as Penn Cove mussels, fresh seafood, steaks, prime rib, and mouthwatering burgers. My personal fav is the Fish & Chips, delicious.

To top it off, Toby’s even offers their own microbrew: Toby’s Parrot Red Ale.
